Wound management

Wunde Schema

The correct treatment of wounds can be very complex, time-consuming and associated with high costs. For this reason in particular, numerous training courses on the correct therapy of wounds can be found on the market. It is not always easy to determine the cause of a wound, type a wound, and to establish a clear treatment regimen. Nevertheless, wounds also have common features that can point the right way to treatment.

Study in focus:

The antibacterial efficacy of antiseptics is evaluated as standard in quantitative in-vitro suspension tests according to DIN EN 13727. Even though the standard uses, for example, albumin and sheep erythrocytes to simulate a protein load as in the wound, this system can only approximate the real situation in the wound. In the study by Professor Augustin and colleagues the artificial protein load was replaced by wound exudate from chronic wounds. In this way, conditions can be generated in quantitative suspension experiments that clearly resemble those in the wound.

In a study with similar design, the effect of active substances on wound healing with the addition of wound exudate was investigated.

Oral care

Oral Care

Oral health is essential for overall well-being and physical attractiveness, and helps to prevent a number of health problems associated with poor oral health.
Worldwide, although preventable, oral diseases are among the most common chronic conditions. They affect about 3.5 billion people - nearly one in two people in the world.
For example, poor dental health can contribute to tooth decay. In addition, poor dental hygiene can lead to gingivitis and, in the long term, periodontal disease.

Patient decolonisation

MRSA

Keeping things clean and hygienic promotes good health and protects against infections. What applies in everyday life has also become routine in our intensive care units. Daily washing of patients as part of basic care is part of everyday practice and is recommended by the KRINKO. Especially in intensive care units, the risk of nosocomial infection is increased. Given that the skin is a source of infection, antiseptic washing in intensive care units is therefore becoming increasingly important in both national and international guidelines.

Vaginal health

Vaginaltherapeutikum

Vaginal health is an important component of a woman's overall health.

Infections or changes in the normal balance of the vaginal microbiome can cause inflammation of the vagina (vaginitis). The most common forms of vaginitis are bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, and trichomoniasis. Aside from the negative impact on sex life and self-esteem, persistent vaginal infections can lead to fertility problems and increase the likelihood of birth-related complications such as lower birth weight or prematurity. According to treatment guidelines, infections are treated with a range of systemic or topical antibiotics and antifungals, with recommendations for antiseptic treatment. Treatment with antibiotics and antifungals are not always successful, and recurrent infections are common (recurrences: 30-60% bacterial vaginosis, 40-50% vaginal candidiasis). This is due to individual resistance mechanisms of the pathogens and evasion mechanisms such as biofilm formation.

Disinfection

Vaginaltherapeutikum

A large proportion of nosocomial infections in hospitals could be avoided through appropriate hygiene measures. In addition to hand disinfection, which is known to be the most effective individual measure, the disinfection of surfaces and instruments also plays a major role.

1. International schülke Infection Prevention Symposium

On June 30, 2023, the 1st International schülke Infection Prevention Symposium took place in Hamburg. Our international scientific team welcomed guests and speakers from over 9 countries and hundreds of online participants from all over the world.

Scientific presentations and subsequent discussions with international and renowned experts on the topics of multidrug resistance, antimicrobial resistance and wound management formed the framework of the symposium.

We thank our speakers for their strong commitment to share their knowledge and enrich the international exchange on the latest research and state of the art in the field of infection prevention and control.

We would also like to thank the global scientific schülke colleagues who worked as a great team to make this event a success.
