World Hand Hygiene Day
May 5th, 2023 with a symbolic plea: the fifth day of the fifth month in the year stands for the five fingers on our hand.The yearly World Hand Hygiene Day aims to maintain global promotion, visibility and sustainability of hand hygiene in health care.
Hands are not only our most important working tool, they are also a frequent transmission route for pathogens.
About 80% of infectious diseases are transmitted by unclean hands touching contaminated surfaces. 1 The pathogens most commonly known here include viral pathogens, such as cold and flu viruses, as well as bacterial pathogens, which can lead to gastrointestinal infections, among other things.
Also droplet and aerosol infections, such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus, might be spread via the hands.
Regular and correctly performed hand disinfection is not only crucial for minimizing the risk of infections, but also promotes a sustainable culture of safety and quality in terms of the ideal infection prevention.
